History lesson gone wrong????

Here is a conversation between Erin and Jack this morning before going to church:

Erin: Jack, do you know why we are all wearing red, white, and blue today?
Jack: Because the USA is playing football (soccer)?
Erin: No, unfortunately not. It is because today is the day that the United States declared independence from England.
Jack: What is independence?
Erin: Well, we didn't want them to tell us what to do anymore especially if we weren't going to get a vote (you know the whole 'no taxation without representation' line).
Jack: What is a vote?

A few explanations later....

Erin: So we said to England, hey we want to be our own country and today is the day that we celebrate that happening.
Jack: Oh, but what if England had said no?
Erin: Well, they kind of did.
Jack: They did? What happened?
Erin: We fought them.
Jack: Who won?
Erin: We did.
Jack: Oh, so we are the winners and they are the losers.

At this moment we hear a moan from Charles come from the other room wondering how Erin is going to get out of this one.

Erin (nervous laughter): Well, yes, I guess so but the war was over 200 years ago so we don't really talk about it like that anymore.

The family gets in the car to go to church with Erin and Charles a bit anxious of what their verbose four-year-old might pull out of his mouth at any moment.

While at church:

Charles: Jack, go tell Rachel Happy Fourth of July.
Jack: Why Rachel?
Charles: Because she is a fellow American.
Jack (very loudly): Oh, so she is a winner too!

And Erin and Charles think to themselves, it could have been a lot worse!

Oh the challenges of living in England on the Fourth of July!
